Houda Rhalem, Houria Knouni, Amina Barkat

Tarik Boulahri, Abdellah Taous, Maha Aït Berri, Imane Traibi, Jalal Elbenaye, Abdelhadi Rouimi

Nourdin Aqodad, Bouchra Loukili, Salim Gallouj, Taoufik Harmouch, Afaf Amarti, FZ Mernissi, Adil Ibrahimi

Sameh Marzouk, Hela Hriz, Moez Jallouli, Yosra Cherif, Zouhir Bahloul

Mohammed Afif, Imane Ouziane, Fadila Kouhen, Jihane Khalil, Fedwa Elomrani, Hanan Elkacemi, Tayeb Kebdani, Hassan Errihani, Noureddine Benjaafar

    Ahmed Id M´barek, Hatim Kouismi

Naziha Khammassi, Dorsaf Mohsen, Youssef Kort, Haykel Abdelhedi, Ouahida Cherif

Meryem Rchachi, Maazou Mahamane Larwanou, Hanan El Ouahabi, Farida Ajdi

Associations between adherence to public health measures and changes in alcohol consumption among middle-aged and older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)

Kiara Pannozzo, Lauren E. Griffith, Aaron Jones, Vanessa De Rubeis, Jayati Khattar, Margaret de Groh, Ying Jiang, Jacqueline McMillan, Laura N. Anderson

AbstractIntroduction:The COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health measures (PHMs) potentially affected alcohol consumption. Our objectives were to evaluate if adherence to PHMs was associated with changes in alcohol consumption and binge drinking during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods:A prospective cohort study was conducted with participants (50–96 years) in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (N=23615). Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were estimated from multinomial logistic regression models for associations between PHM adherence (self-quarantine, attending public gatherings, leaving home, mask wearing and handwashing) and self-reported changes in alcohol consumption during the first year of the pandemic and prospectively measured changes in alcohol consumption frequency and frequency of binge-drinking events from 2015–2018 to 2020.Results:During the first year of the pandemic, 13% (n=2733) of participants self-reported increased alcohol consumption, while 13% (n = 2921) self-reported decreased consumption. Prospective measures suggested 19.1% (n = 4421) increased and 34.5% (n = 7971) decreased consumption frequency, while 12.9% (n = 1427) increased and 17.6% (n = 1953) decreased frequency of binge-drinking events. High PHM adherence, compared to low, was associated with higher odds of decreased alcohol consumption frequency (aOR = 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06–1.30). No associations were observed between PHM adherence and self-reported change in alcohol consumption or frequency of binge-drinking events. Associations were consistent across socioeconomic groups. Conclusion:PHM adherence was associated with decreased, and not increased, frequency of alcohol consumption by adults aged 50–96 years in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Associations between Antenatal Care Visit Attendance and Infant Mortality and Growth

Aimee J. Lansdale, Mamadou Bountogo, Ali Sie, Alphonse Zakane, Guillaume Compaoré, Thierry Ouedraogo, Elodie Lebas, Thomas Lietman, Catherine E. Oldenburg

ABSTRACT.This study examines the association between antenatal care (ANC) attendance and infant mortality and growth outcomes. The study used data from the Nouveux-nés et Azithromycine: une Innovation dans le Traitement des Enfants (NAITRE) trial conducted in Burkina Faso. This analysis included 21,795 neonates aged 8 to 27 days who were enrolled in the trial and had ANC data available. Infants were followed until 6 months of age. The analysis adjusted for potential confounders including infant’s sex, maternal age, education, urbanicity, geographic region, season (dry versus rainy), pregnancy type (singleton versus multiple), number of previous pregnancies, if the infant was breastfed, and if the facility had an onsite physician to account for level of care. We used logistic and linear regression models to evaluate the association between ANC visits and all-cause infant mortality and infant growth measurements at 6 months. There was no significant association between ANC visits and 6-month mortality. Higher ANC attendance was associated with improved growth outcomes in infants at 6 months of age. After adjusting for potential confounders, each additional ANC visit was associated with a 0.03 kg increase in mean weight, 0.07 cm increase in mean length, 0.04 SD increase in mean mid-upper-arm circumference, 0.04 SD increase in mean height-for-age, 0.04 SD mean weight-for-age, and 0.02 SD mean weight-for-length Z-scores. These mean differences were statistically significant (except for weight-for-length Z-scores) but may not be clinically meaningful. Further research is warranted to explore the relationship between ANC attendance and longer-term health outcomes among infants.

Associations Between Climate‐Sensitive Nutrients, Clinical Malaria, and Anaemia Among Young Children in Rural Burkina Faso: An Analysis of Baseline Data From a Cluster‐Randomised Controlled Trial

Adi Lukas Kurniawan, Maria Virginia Borga, Fanta Zerbo, Carol Akinyi Abidha, Anais Gonnet, Raissa Sorgho, Boubacar Coulibaly, Ali Sié, Ina Danquah

ABSTRACTObjectiveMalaria and anaemia are significant public health challenges among young children in Burkina Faso, with complex interactions between climate variability, food security, and nutrient deficiencies. This study aimed to identify the malariometric profile and nutrient patterns among young children and to determine the associations of nutrient patterns with clinical malaria and anaemia.MethodsThis cross‐sectional study recruited 701 children aged 6–23 months in Nouna, Burkina Faso. Dietary intakes were collected using a semi‐quantitative Food Propensity Questionnaire. Principal Component Analysis was used to derive nutrient patterns. We calculated logistic regressions for the associations of nutrient patterns with clinical malaria (Plasmodium species with fever (≥ 37.5°C) or a history of fever within the last 2 weeks or prescribed anti‐malaria medication) and anaemia (Hb < 11 g/dL).ResultsIn this study population (n = 452; median age: 17 months (interquartile range: 12, 21); male sex: 52%), 25.0% of the children had clinical malaria, and 88.5% had anaemia. Adherence to a ‘fat and vitamin A’ dietary pattern was inversely associated with the chance of clinical malaria (OR quintile 3 vs. quintile 1: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.96) but not with anaemia. A ‘fibre and micronutrient’ pattern was neither associated with malaria nor with anaemia.ConclusionAnaemia is common in this malaria‐endemic area, and diets characterised by fat and vitamin A may reduce the risk of clinical malaria in young children. This highlights the need for comprehensive management strategies addressing both malaria and anaemia, including community‐based educational interventions to enhance complementary feeding practices in malaria‐endemic regions.

Associations between dental problems and underweight status among rural women in Burkina Faso: results from the first WHO Stepwise Approach to Surveillance (STEPS) survey

Jeoffray Diendéré, Augustin Nawidimbasba Zeba, Sibraogo Kiemtoré, Olivier Ouahamin Sombié, Philippe Fayemendy, Pierre Jésus, Athanase Millogo, Aly Savadogo, Halidou Tinto, Jean-Claude Desport

Objective:To explore the relationships between dental problems and underweight status among rural women in Burkina Faso by using nationally representative data.Design:This was a cross-sectional secondary study of primary data obtained by the 2013 WHO Stepwise Approach to Surveillance survey conducted in Burkina Faso. Descriptive and analytical analyses were performed using Student’s t test, ANOVA, the χ2 test, Fisher’s exact test and logistic regression.Setting:All thirteen Burkinabè regions were categorised using quartiles of urbanisation rates.Participants:The participants were 1730 rural women aged 25–64 years. Results:The prevalence of underweight was 16·0 %, and 24·1 % of participants experienced dental problems during the 12-month period. The women with dental problems were more frequently underweight (19·9 % and 14·7 %; P < 0·05) and had a lower mean BMI (21·1 ± 3·2 and 21·6 ± 3·7 kg/m2, P < 0·01) than those without dental problems. More risk factors for underweight were observed in less urbanised regions among elderly individuals (> 49 years old) and smokeless tobacco users. Age > 49 years, professions with inconsistent income, a lack of education, smokeless tobacco use and low BMI were factors that were significantly associated with dental problems, while residency in a low-urbanisation area was a protective factor. Conclusion:The prevalence of underweight in rural Burkinabè women is among the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, and women with dental problems are more frequently affected than those without dental problems. Public health measures for the prevention of these disorders should specifically target women aged over 49 years and smokeless tobacco users.

Associations between Mode of HIV Testing and Consent, Confidentiality, and Referral: A Comparative Analysis in Four African Countries

A study carried out by Carla Obermeyer and colleagues examines whether practices regarding consent, confidentiality, and referral vary depending on whether HIV testing is provided through voluntary counseling and testing or provider-initiated testing. BackgroundRecommendations about scaling up HIV testing and counseling highlight the need to provide key services and to protect clients' rights, but it is unclear to what extent different modes of testing differ in this respect. This paper examines whether practices regarding consent, confidentiality, and referral vary depending on whether testing is provided through voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) or provider-initiated testing. Methods and FindingsThe MATCH (Multi-Country African Testing and Counseling for HIV) study was carried out in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda. Surveys were conducted at selected facilities. We defined eight outcome measures related to pre- and post-test counseling, consent, confidentiality, satisfactory interactions with providers, and (for HIV-positive respondents) referral for care. These were compared across three types of facilities: integrated facilities, where testing is provided along with medical care; stand-alone VCT facilities; and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) facilities, where testing is part of PMTCT services. Tests of bivariate associations and modified Poisson regression were used to assess significance and estimate the unadjusted and adjusted associations between modes of testing and outcome measures. In total, 2,116 respondents tested in 2007 or later reported on their testing experience. High percentages of clients across countries and modes of testing reported receiving recommended services and being satisfied. In the unadjusted analyses, integrated testers were less likely to meet with a counselor before testing (83% compared with 95% of VCT testers; p<0.001), but those who had a pre-test meeting were more likely to have completed consent p

Associations between negative COVID-19 experiences and symptoms of anxiety and depression: a study based on a representative Canadian national sample

Sandy Rao, Gina Dimitropoulos, Jeanne V.A. Williams, Vandad Sharifi, Mina Fahim, Amlish Munir, Andrew G.M. Bulloch, Scott B. Patten

AbstractIntroduction:Amid the widespread impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a notable increase in symptoms of anxiety and depression has become a pressing concern. This study examined the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms in Canada from September to December 2020, assessing demographic and socioeconomic influences, as well as the potential role of COVID-19 diagnoses and related negative experiences. Methods:Data were drawn from the Survey on COVID-19 and Mental Health by Statistics Canada, which used a two-stage sample design to gather responses from 14689 adults across ten provinces and three territorial capitals, excluding less than 2% of the population. Data were collected through self-administered electronic questionnaires or phone interviews. Analytical techniques, such as frequencies, cross-tabulation and logistic regression, were used to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms, the demographic characteristics of Canadians with increased anxiety and depression symptoms and the association of these symptoms with COVID-19 diagnoses and negative experiences during the pandemic. Results:The study found that 14.62% (95% CI: 13.72%–15.51%) of respondents exhibited symptoms of depression, while 12.89% (95% CI: 12.04%–13.74%) reported anxiety symptoms. No clear differences in symptom prevalence were observed between those infected by COVID-19, or those close to someone infected, compared to those without these experiences. However, there were strong associations between traditional risk factors for depressive and anxiety symptoms and negative experiences during the pandemic, such as physical health problems, loneliness and personal relationship challenges in the household. Conclusion:This study provides insight into the relationship between COVID-19 and Canadians’ mental health, demonstrating an increased prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms associated with COVID-19-related adversities and common pre-pandemic determinants of these sy

Associations between prenatal malaria exposure, maternal antibodies at birth, and malaria susceptibility during the first year of life in Burkina Faso

ABSTRACTIn this study, we investigated how different categories of prenatal malaria exposure (PME) influence levels of maternal antibodies in cord blood samples and the subsequent risk of malaria in early childhood in a birth cohort study (N = 661) nested within the COSMIC clinical trial (NCT01941264) in Burkina Faso. Plasmodium falciparum infections during pregnancy and infants’ clinical malaria episodes detected during the first year of life were recorded. The levels of maternal IgG and IgG1-4 to 15 P. falciparum antigens were measured in cord blood by quantitative suspension array technology. Results showed a significant variation in the magnitude of maternal antibody levels in cord blood, depending on the PME category, with past placental malaria (PM) more frequently associated with significant increases of IgG and/or subclass levels across three groups of antigens defined as pre-erythrocytic, erythrocytic, and markers of PM, as compared to those from the cord of non-exposed control infants. High levels of antibodies to certain erythrocytic antigens (i.e., IgG to EBA140 and EBA175, IgG1 to EBA175 and MSP142, and IgG3 to EBA140 and MSP5) were independent predictors of protection from clinical malaria during the first year of life. By contrast, high levels of IgG, IgG1, and IgG2 to the VAR2CSA DBL1-2 and IgG4 to DBL3-4 were significantly associated with an increased risk of clinical malaria. These findings indicate that PME categories have different effects on the levels of maternal-derived antibodies to malaria antigens in children at birth, and this might drive heterogeneity to clinical malaria susceptibility in early childhood.

Associations of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes with high-grade cervical neoplasia (CIN2+) in a cohort of women living with HIV in Burkina Faso and South Africa

ObjectiveTo describe associations of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2+) in women living with HIV (WLHIV) in Burkina Faso (BF) and South Africa (SA).MethodsProspective cohort of WLHIV attending HIV outpatient clinics and treatment centres. Recruitment was stratified by ART status. Cervical HPV genotyping using INNO-LiPA and histological assessment of 4-quadrant cervical biopsies at enrolment and 16 months later.ResultsAmong women with CIN2+ at baseline, the prevalence of any HR-HPV genotypes included in the bi/quadrivalent (HPV16/18) or nonavalent (HPV16/18/31/35/45/52/58) HPV vaccines ranged from 37% to 90%. HPV58 was most strongly associated with CIN2+ (aOR = 5.40, 95%CI: 2.77–10.53). At 16-months follow-up, persistence of any HR-HPV was strongly associated with incident CIN2+ (aOR = 7.90, 95%CI: 3.11–20.07), as was persistence of HPV16/18 (aOR = 5.25, 95%CI: 2.14–12.91) and the additional HR types in the nonavalent vaccine (aOR = 3.23, 95%CI: 1.23–8.54).ConclusionHR-HPV persistence is very common among African WLHIV and is linked to incident CIN2+. HPV vaccines could prevent between 37–90% of CIN2+ among African WLHIV.
